MR PORTER The Sartorialist ‘Ladies & gentlemen Cyclists’ from Amsterdam to Milan via Copenhagen!
Style Spot: Chic Cyclists in Amsterdam — by MR PORTER
Words by Ms Jodie Harrison
We visited the European city of Amsterdam to see how its residents manage to cycle and stay stylish
As more and more of us are adopting bicycles as a modish and eco-friendly form of transport, we thought we would find out how the guys in Amsterdam - a city of cyclists - manage to get to and from work without getting their chinos caught in a chain, or their boot polish scuffed on a peddle. According to musician Mr Nick Vandenburg, "It's all about having a robust sit-up bike", while Mr Menno van Meurs, a store owner, advises keeping your peddle power "to under 35 kilometres an hour". None of them seem to think cycling to work impinges on their clothing choices: "I think riding a bike gives you more, rather than fewer, options when it comes to what you wear," argues Mr Allard Honigh, a photographer. Watch the film above and see if you agree.
Singing pop in French is not easy, and not every band gives it a try, but some brilliantly succeed, as Porco Rosso show. Formed in 2002, the three members have found their own style – a balance between their influences and their personality. After releasing two EPs (2004, 2006), they dropped their LP, La Vie Sans Moi (”Life Without Me”), last year. You might not understand the lyrics of 10.000 Lieues À La Ronde, but you don’t have to – the rhythm and the vocals are too catchy not to appreciate.
Let’s see if you can guess what We See Lights sound like before you listen to them. The group hosted an event this month called The Twee Jamboree in their native Edinburgh with live music and home baking, while their new Twee Love Pop EP features a song entitled I Hope You Like The Smiths. I think you get the picture. My Oh My Oh My is by far their finest moment to date – it’s an utterly adorable anthem for the lovestruck and has some delightful banjo playing. Check out Bandcamp or iTunes for more of their music.
Male British singer-songwriters are hardly thin on the ground and yet, even given the crowded market, Ben Howard stands out. A 24-year-old Devon boy with a penchant for surfing, he’s just released an EP on the Mumford-affiliated Communion label and has signed thereafter to Island – he apparently inked the deal because of their history with Nick Drake and John Martyn. And that’s Howard all over: folk-pop with substance and class. On this, a live version of Empty Corridors, he showcases, as a recent New Band of the Day article put it, a “guitar sound that recalls Drake’s complex tunings, while every so often you expect his gently gruff tones to start warbling Martyn’s Bless The Weather”.
MR PORTER ‘how to GET FIT, FAST’ by Mr James Duigan, co-founder, Bodyism!
HOW TO GET FIT, FAST — by Ms James Duigan
Illustrations by Ms Anje Jager by Mr James Duigan
You've booked your holiday. You've bought your swim shorts. All that's left to do is to rid yourself of that little accessory hanging around your middle: your gut. Getting fit fast might not seem quite as easy as drinking all those beers did but trust me, it's worth the struggle. Stripping body fat and increasing lean muscle is entirely possible when you focus on exactly what works. Not only does being fit look great, it feels great; the morning you get up, look in the mirror and actually notice a difference in your body is a very special moment for any man.
—
SOME COMMON MISTAKES...
— Not working hard enough
If you want to lose weight you are going to have to eat less and work more. It's that simple. If you are heading for a run, break it up by sprinting for 30 seconds as fast as you can and then jogging for two minutes
— Drinking sports drinks
In my experience, it's better to just stick with water, as most sports drinks are full of sugar, or worse. Remember to stay clean and lean - it's simple
— Not eating enough protein
Stop eating like your girlfriend and make sure you have protein with every meal. I'm not talking about huge hunks of meat but small quantities at regular intervals - at least four times a day. If you can't handle too much meat then get a high-quality protein powder
— Bad Digestion
If you're not digesting your food then you are becoming toxic. Having good digestion is important so make sure you get enough, at least 30 grams of fibre a day. Try using a fibre-blend supplement, or do what your mum told you and eat all your greens
