A SINGLE MAN is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, it is the story of a British college professor (Colin Firth) who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner. The story is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life.

Interview with
TOM FORD
“This is Not a Gay Film”
“A great movie haunts you, it’s both entertaining and thought provoking. In that way, I hope that A SINGLE MAN makes you question things… think about things in a way that you haven’t thought about before.” – Tom Ford
Being the Renaissance man that he is — former designer for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent; founder of his own eponymous luxe menswear line; now a screenwriter and director — Ford has a keen nose for all things aesthetic. So we assumed he was complimenting us on our cologne. Far from it. The former smoker was instead vicariously taking in the cloud of Marlboro Light that apparently enveloped us.“A Single Man” is Ford’s directorial debut, and he says the film was deeply personal. “It’s extremely autobiographical,” he says. “When you watch it, you are inside my head for an hour and a half.”
“ THE ROLE OF A LITETIME FOR COLIN FIRTH.”
-Richard Corliss, Time Magazine
Set in early-’60s Los Angeles, “A Single Man,” which displays the the sexy texture of Almodovar, follows a day in the life of a gay British English professor (Colin Firth), who copes with the sudden death of his longtime partner with the help of a female friend (played by Julianne Moore). “If you know anything about Tom, it’s that he’s so meticulous and prepared that it wasn’t like working with a first-time director,” Moore told us.
“THERE IS ALREADY OSCAR* BUZZ FOR JULIANNE MOORE.”
-Jeffries Blackerby, The New York Times
The movie taps into Ford’s own life on several levels. “There are so many similarities,” said Ford, smartly dressed in a Tom Ford suit, white shirt, and black tie that resembles the uniform of Firth’s character in the film. Ford readily admits that both he and the film’s protagonist are rather meticulous, to say the least, and have, at moments, felt isolated and depressed. Not to mention, the canine in the film is actually Ford’s own pooch and the surname of the main character was the name of Ford’s first boyfriend.
“I’m fortunate enough to have experienced extreme materialism in my life, but the point of the film is to remind us of the little things in life — not some new shoes you bought or a new car,” Ford said. Our culture, he added, is so obsessed with the next great thing that we forget that “life’s about living in the present. We live in an artificial world. In the fashion business, you live in the future for the next collection. But when I spend time on my ranch in New Mexico—with the sun above me and the rattlesnakes growing under the bush—I appreciate the present.”
Although “A Single Man” is generating Oscar buzz (Firth won the best actor award at the Venice film festival), whether it will be a commercial hit is another matter — particularly with the film’s sensual appreciation of the male torso. Ford said, “I wasn’t trying to make Terminator 12. But this is not a gay film. I don’t even think about that. There are so many gay characters on TV that it’s almost become a cliché.”
Given his track record, it’s hard to fathom the prospect of Ford undertaking an endeavor that isn’t commercially minded. But he insists that the risk of switching gears from fashion to filmmaking was well worth it, no matter the outcome. “If you’re in mid-life and you haven’t yet done what you want to do then you’d better start doing it now,” he said.
A SINGLE MAN is expected to go on release in early 2010.

Usually I know how to watch movies before their release date... For Tom Ford’s »A Single Man« I’ll definitely wait until it officially debuts here in Germany (March 25th, 2010), but from today the waiting period still takes two months! :/A SINGLE MAN Website.........................................................................................AMERICAN FASHION DESIGNER AND FILM DIRECTORTOM FORD
Is there a sexier man in fashion than Tom Ford? If there is, he hasn’t crossed my path yet. The man who uses sex appeal ferociously in his advertising campaigns, the man who regualarly poses nude for provocative artistic photographs, the man who in his first year as Creative Director increased Gucci’s profits 90%, is a Virgo. If this doesn’t finally help shatter the reputation of Virgos as mild-mannered, prudish, germaphobes I don’t know what will!
