Angels Woman...Francoise Hardy

David Bowie once said:

" I was for a very long time passionately in love with her,
as I'm sure she's guessed. Every male in the world,
and a number of females also were, and we all still are."

Pop icon

I wish I knew how to do the French cidilla on a keyboard for this post.

Francoise was a fashion and music icon in the the 60s, entering celebrity during the ye-ye crazy in France. Still chic, but now with snow white hair, she maintains a website with updated information, etc on her career and appearences.

One would be cold-hearted not to soften looking at these ethereal, grainy photos of a time where thin snug sweaters, pale lips, monochromatic outfits, cropped jackets, winged eyeliner, LP records, curtain-like bangs, and boots boots boots reigned supreme.

Tous les garçons et les filles
1962
(Paroles:- Françoise Hardy, Musique:- Françoise Hardy/Roger Samyn)

In April 1962 Françoise Hardy recorded the four tracks for her first EP. Oh oh chéri was listed as the lead track, but upon its release, one of the three of her own compositions that made up the rest of the release was the one receiving airplay: Tous les garçons et les filles. The EP went on to sell over 500,000 copies that year in France alone. She took the song into the British and German charts in its original French and also recorded versions of the song in English, German and Italian. The Italian version, Quelli della mia età, went on to top the Italian hit parade. This Scopitone was shot at an amusement park.

" Yé Yé sound and style "

Of all the singers to come out of the 60's French pop movement called Yé Yé, I think that she was the most talented. She wrote most of her own songs, played the guitar, and had a beautiful voice. In fact, she still does....but it's her songs from the 60's that I like the best.

Click here to watch her sing my favorite song of hers,
here
to see her on a rooftop in Pigalle,
and here for the best view of her pretty face.

" She's totally got that rock chic thing down to a science, she's got the best bangs (or fringe if you're British), she plays her own instruments and she's inspired everyone from Mick Jagger to Nicolas Ghesquière to Kim Gordon to meeeee."
