Tateo Tajima, the cheerful, mustachioed owner of a 160-year-old hot spring family ryokan, had a dream to create a resort based on the fundamental human need to forget the city, return to nature and reconnect with one's origins.
The result: Tenku no Mori private residences, which overlook the southern Kirishima mountain range in the Kagoshima Prefecture, on Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Tenku no Mori means "forest in the heavens" and the resort is a self-sufficient and sustainable 50-hectare plot.Fourteen years ago, Tajima cleared the site of thick bamboo scrub and built a spa consisting of three day-use and three overnight villas. But this is not a health farm.
An attentive troop tend to guests and grounds: Kazuko Tanaka cares for the terraced slopes, farming a vast array of vegetables; Koji Sakoda is the resident chicken-fancier; Minako Kohama helps guests with their food and Norio Ueki is the caretaker.
