Headlights - Wildlife (2009)

It's been something of a tumultuous year for fine Champagne, Illinois indie/pop band Headlights. Formerly a trio, two new members were added, writing and recording of their third album was underway - and then, well...just taking a look at the picture kind of sums things up. After a struggle for creative direction what was supposed to be a quintet ended up one member short -- and the studio work was scrapped completely. Not surprisingly, regrouping and moving ahead has produced a new work that is lyrically fraught with issues of loss, alienation and longing. More importantly, it has also produced an album of immediacy and compelling emotional resonance -- and some impeccably duressed, smart indie pop.

“On this record we just sang, that’s the take, that’s the part, there’s the vocals, here’s the mic, sing the song, done,” says the guitarist/songwriter Tristan Wraight. Building upon the bright, glittering pop direction of their '08 album Some Racing, Some Stopping, new project Wildlife (October 6, Polyvinyl) eschews the discordant for the casually harmonious (at least soundwise), with new songs such as lead track "Get Going" delivering a rush of brisk melody and tasteful, tender hooks, blending classic yesteryear traits with a thoroughly modern take. Crisply, efficiently produced, airy and infectious, Headlights don't break a sweat -- but maybe that's just because they make it sound so easy. Recommended.

Headlights - Remixes (2008)

When you live on the road, you make friends fast. Headlights have spent the past four years touring practically nonstop, logging in over 400 shows since 2004. After their critically acclaimed sophomore album Some Racing, Some Stopping came out in early 2008, the band started calling on all of their friends from the road to remix their songs. Six months later, Remixes was completed. This limited-edition CD features remixes from The Album Leaf, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Son Lux, as well as Cale Parks and T.J Lipple of Aloha.

LISTENING TO THIS RECORD, I COULDN'T HELP BUT THINK ABOUT
ALL THE SUPER HARDWORKING
BANDS I LOVE!

who make great records but never quite become the blog-hyped media
darlings that they actually deserve to be.
Hopefully with the release of this record, Headlights will finally get their due.
