Twickenham, London, United Kingdom (2006 – present) Noah and the Whale is an alternative/folk group formed in Twickenham, London, United Kingdom in 2006. They consist of Charlie Fink (vocals, guitar), Tom Hobden (fiddle, keyboards), Matt “Urby Whale” Owens (bass), Fred Abbott (keyboards, guitar) and Matthew Petulla (drums). Former members of the band include Doug Fink (drums) and Laura Marling (vocals, guitar) and Jack Hamson (drums). According to Songfacts, the band’s name is a marriage of the title of one of their favorite films, The Squid and the Whale and Noah Baumbach, who directed the movie.
They released their debut album Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down - which contains the UK Top 10 hit 5 Years Time - in August of 2008.
A year later, following the end of a relationship between Charlie Fink and Laura Marling, the band released The First Days Of Spring, a concept album written about Laura. It came with a film to accompany the album, written and directed by Charlie.
Last Night On Earth. This is the story of last night on earth. Ten tracks to tell one, many and countless tales. Ten tracks that look through the pane, beyond reflection, into the night dark and the lives burning brightly within it. It may be their last night on earth. It may just feel that way.
Our third album is adventurous like its journey from Bethnal Green synagogue via the Thames riverbank across the Atlantic, the United States and all manner of Los Angeles neon-lighted highways. But it is unmistakably Noah and the Whale.
The tracklisting gives little away but probably hints at the record’s expansive mood. Already NATW have been excited to offer up the free-to-try Wild Thing. Please enjoy it and share it and in due course listen to its sibling songs and do the same.
